Enjoy An Utterly Turk-tastic Holiday In The Sun
I had previously spent the majority of my summer holidays along the coast of the many Spanish islands found in and around the Mediterranean Sea, but I decided wanted a change. After much consideration and research into the other destinations I found Turkey, a country which I knew little about. In Turkey I was surprised to find so much variety when it comes to a holiday and although I was looking for a coastal resort I noticed there were plenty of interesting and historical cities rich in culture. To back up my point the country is home to plenty of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Istanbul is Turkey's most recognisable city and up until very recently I was under the impression that it was the capital when in actual fact that honour is bestowed upon the city of Ankara. Istanbul is Turkey's biggest city and a very popular tourist destination where you can visit many monuments and museums that will enlighten visitors to the colourful history that the country has had, including the rule of the Ottoman and Byzantine Empires.
Walking around the streets of Istanbul you will discover the intoxicating sights and sounds of traditional Turkish life that is simply infectious. An interesting fact about Istanbul is that is the only city in the world to be spread across two continents. Ankara is considered to be the countries administrative centre as well as huge university town. You can expect to find a blend of the old and new in Ankara with structures like the Column of Julian the Apostate and the Atakule Tower in Cankaya.
If you plans for a holiday don't include taking in a foreign culture or discovering a foreign history then you are probably looking for sun and beaches, in which case Turkey's south coast is the place for you. I would recommend three regions in particular, Marmaris, Fethiye and Antalya. Amongst those regions you will find great resorts that offer great beaches with plenty of water sports to keep you busy, and restaurants to enjoy and evening meal before heading to the many great bars where you can stay out until the morning hours.
Marmaris City is high on the list for me because it offers you everything you want from a summer holiday destination. The beach has fine sands that merge with warm crystal clear waters that are perfect to cool down from the endless hours of sun during the day, or you can enjoy the many water sports on offer around the beach. Mini cruises are popular with tourist as you can be taken along the coast to visit other resorts as well as see some of the fantastic coastline. Marmaris is a place that is blessed with natural beauty you will notice the city itself is surrounded by a mountainous area and pine tree forests. When evening comes around you can choice from a wide variety of restaurants along the seafront before enjoying fine music with a drink or two in the many fun and friendly bars.
