Dec 23rd, 2011 Laura Steinfield

The city is dYork north of England, at the confluence of two rivers, the Ouse and Foss. York played a great historical role since ancient times and gave his name to the county of Yorkshire, which surrounds it. York depended formerly of Yorkshire, but form a unitary authority since 1996. In 2001, its population was 181,094 inhabitants. The city has city status, and also has a university of national and international reputation: UNIVERSITY dYork. Since 2006, York St John College hitherto Autonomous University of Leeds, is an independent university.

Its geographical coordinates are 53 , 57 North, 1 ,05 West. The ancient name is noted dYork Eborakon Eburacum Ptolemy and the Antonine Itinerary. It corresponds to an archetypal Celtic spread on the continent: Evry, Ivry Ivrey, Yvrac going back to all similar forms Ebriacum, Ebriaco some of which may be compounded with the name of man Eburius is a compound Eburacum ... eburo of boar or if (see Eburones) and the suffix widespread both in Gaul than in Great Britain-ako (-acum, in-og Britton) used to locate. The city of York was founded in -71 and has a rich history, Roman and Viking.

The Celtic tribes living in the region belonged to the tribes of the Brigantes and Parisii, they probably come from an expedition of the Gallic tribe that gave its name to Paris.

First capital of the Roman province of Britannia Inferior (Roman Emperor Septimius Severus died in York in 211 AD), it later became the seat of an archbishop who was covering the North of England under the name Anglo-Saxon Eoforwic (mentioned in 644). From 866-954, York was the capital of the Kingdom of Jorvik.

On September 20, 1066, Harald Hardrada took the city, but was killed five days later by King Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, which was victorious in turn destroyed in the Battle of Hastings shortly after. In October 1068, the future Canute of Denmark said the Saint was sent by his father, King Sven I of Denmark and with the help of English rebels occupied the town, which was ultimately taken over by King William the Conqueror in December.

The city remained one of the largest in England during the Middle Ages, thanks to thriving trade in wool. His decline begins with the industrial revolution: as a result, many buildings dating from the Middle Ages, also destroyed to make way for factories, have remained essentially intact. The renewed interest in the Middle Ages knew the nineteenth century brought an extensive renovation that has made York a major tourist destination. The jewel is the cathedral, also called York Minster.

York has about 181,000 inhabitants. Until recently the population was almost exclusively white. The proportion of white population now represents 97.84 of the total , which is still quite high for a city this size. York also offers less social diversity than other cities, neighborhoods with few workers or middle class as is the case in Leeds for example. York's population is slightly older than the national average.
