4000 Years in the Making
Greece has seen its whole culture shaped by the historical events that took place over its vast land. Greece has suffered a few invasions even been conquered by the likes of the Byzantine, Ottoman and Roman Empires in its time. Athens is the capital of Greece and central to the country's history and culture, the huge city is the birthplace of what is classical Greece. Piraeus is the Ancient port of Athens which is now a very industrial area which serves ferry's coming to and from Aegean Islands and others.
The capital of the Greek island Crete is Heraklion and it has major Archaeological importance, the city's museum holds the remains of the Minoan civilisation. The palace of Knossos is also in this region which is well known for its connection to the Minotaur from Greek Mythology.
The many Greek islands are generally visited for reasons other than culture, mainly the great beaches and glorious natural surroundings. You can find plenty of resorts that offer golden beaches and warm clear waters on the shores across Crete, Corfu and Rhodes, some more relaxing than others. Crete is home to more family orientated places to visit to enjoy calmer holidays. Kavos in Corfu and Faliraki in Rhodes and in these resorts there are generally many large groups of singles enjoying the beaches during the day and the bars on the evening. The beaches in these areas are filled with excursions and water sports where you spend the whole day.
When evening comes around you can head to a number of restaurants offering a variety of popular international cuisines, and after that you can make your way to a bar to enjoy a cocktail. There are plenty of bars so you are sure to find one that is playing the type of music you love, and there are many clubs too where you will find yourself dancing until the early morning hours.
