Jan 2nd, 2012 Nick Messe

Into every family's life, a Florida vacation must fall. You may hear folks excitedly talking about their upcoming trip to Disneyworld, or Busch Gardens, especially around the time of spring school break. Everyone wants to get away and indulge in some sunshine.

While the top attractions are definitely a huge draw, and something that everyone should make the trek to see, there are other areas of Florida that beckon.

One of the best areas, is southwest Florida on the gulf coast. Here, mother nature offers endless sunny skies, and sparkling waters to tempt the northerner who is running away from snow and cold. Here the climate is almost one hundred percent guaranteed to be perfect.

Everglades City may not be a name that readily springs into the mind of the average tourist. This fishing village is an important destination for sports fisherfolk, who flock here to try their luck with fishing at its finest.

It is also known as the gateway to the 10,000 islands and charmingly blends its historical past with the new tourism it now enjoys. It is the perfect area to use as home base while taking side trips to Naples and Marco Island. Miami, Fort Myers and Fort Lauderdale are under two hours away.

You'll also be within striking distance of the Big Cypress National Preserve, Fakahatchee State Preserve, and the awesome Everglades National Park.

The founder of this town, George T. Storter, had the vision back in the early 1920's, to promote sports fishing to the Florida visitor. Prior to this, farming was the way to earn a living in this area. Farms thrived, growing bananas, vegetables, and sugarcane.

George Storter's vision was so accurate, that his house became the Rod & Gun Club in 1925. Its warm and homey atmosphere was the meeting place for fishing enthusiastist and visitors. Even Ernest Hemingway and Dwight D. Eisenhower were known to stop by.

Even if you don't fish, there is still lots to enjoy such as kayaking or taking an airboat ride through the everglades. Why not pretend you are Gilligan or the millionaire and let the skipper take you on a one hour tour? You'll see manatees, alligators and lots of exotic birds looking back at you.

An airboat can take you places that no other mode of transportation can. Imagine being able to see everything from the mangrove jungles to the sawgrass prairies? Don't leave Florida without hopping onto one of these rigs.

Or you can take the kids on a safari, with trained naturalist guides helping you check out all the wonders of the everglades. You'll all squeal with delight when you see the huge variety of snakes, mammals, plants, and of course more 'gators. Just think of the new appreciation you will have for our natural world and all the memories you will collect along the way.
